Join us for an opportunity to experience the art of animation and be a part of Walt Disney Animation Studios. The Talent Development Program is available for emerging artists and offers up to a 12 month paid position at Walt Disney Animation Studios. We offer an immersive Trainee experience, where participants will work under the guidance of a Disney Mentor to develop craft skills while applying them in a real world environment.
The Talent Development 2D Animation Program begins February 2022. Please note, the safety and well-being of our teams is very important to us. We will determine whether this program will be in-person at our Burbank, CA studio or virtual in the coming months based on local state and county ordinance. The deadline for applications is January 23, 2022, 11:59 PM PST.
The 2D Animation Trainee
The 2D Animation Trainees will cross train across the hand-drawn crafts of character animation, effects animation, and cleanup under the mentorship of such iconic masters as Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn, Randy Haycock, and Rachel Bibb. As an animation trainee applicant, you are a creative performance artist with a pencil, capable of capturing and caricaturing the mechanics of character motion and emotion. In addition to character animation, you have an inquisitive mind and an ability to draw natural and physical phenomena (rain, fire, water, etc) and enrich it with personality and believable life. Furthermore, you should feel comfortable interpreting an animator’s rough drawings and refine them into the final line drawings seen on film providing consistency of staying on model. Your animation reel should demonstrate a strong understanding of acting and animation principles such as dialogue, pantomime, timing, clear staging, squash and stretch, anticipation, follow-through, and secondary action. Prior training should include anatomy and solving problems in weight, balance, movement, space, and proportion.
As a 2D Animation Trainee, the first four months of your program are structured to introduce you to the art of traditional animation, our studio culture, and our production environment providing you with nurturing mentorship with Disney artists. Your first month will allow you to train across the disciplines of traditional character animation, effects animation, and cleanup. You will then be able to commit to a single discipline of interest for the remainder of the training. A four month review provides you with real-time feedback and determines future assignments and promotional opportunities that would bring your skills into real-time production environments.
